Provenance

I met Bruce in the earliest days of ARTIS PURA, when I was set up at the back of the Woolloongabba Art Gallery. Two doors up, a wine bar and vintage clothing shop was opening — Can You Keep A Secret? (CYKAS) — co-founded by the incredible Emily Jane, who went on to become one of the great quiet forces behind the Brisbane live music scene. CYKAS ran for a decade as a genuine institution before it closed its doors, and Emily has since carried that spirit forward with her newest venue, Mirrorball Ministries, in West End.

Bruce was close to Emily, and he'd come by to visit her often — always stopping in to see us too. This piece was a personal gift from him, given to me directly.

Framing

In honour of it, I framed it in one of the earliest true closed-corner gilded frames I ever handcrafted: sourced timber moulding built up by hand to create the profile, then finished using traditional water-gilding techniques in 23kt gold. The matting is two layers of rag mat, with one bevel gilded in 23kt gold to match, and it's glazed in Museum glass. This frame dates to around 2014.

About Bruce Downey

Bruce Downey was a Brisbane artist and, I believe, a trained architect — a lover of the arts who found real joy in supporting small, creative, and unique businesses. He had a particular gift for seeing something special in people and quietly backing them, almost like an adopted father figure to those he took under his wing.
