The Work

I found this piece in a second-hand shop in Brisbane about sixteen years ago, back when I was still working in framing. There was something about it that stopped me — the loose, confident brushwork in the gums, the quiet stillness of the scene.

It's stayed with me ever since, one of those pieces that earns its place simply by being loved.

Framing

I kept it unframed for years before eventually giving it a frame of its own: spotted gum, joined with traditional spline joints, finished with UltraVue glazing and a rag mat set with French lines.

About Attributed to Kevin Grealy

Kevin Grealy was born in Brisbane in 1941. He trained as an art teacher in the early 1960s, studying ceramics under Carl McConnell, before travelling to Canada to complete further study in ceramics and printmaking between 1966 and 1970. On his return to Australia, he settled in Queensland, later managing the Barambah Pottery at Cherbourg from 1974.

Grealy has spent much of his working life living among the Glasshouse Mountains, and their rugged silhouettes have remained a recurring presence in his printmaking. Best known today for his ceramics and prints, this watercolour — signed and dated 1975 — is an earlier example of his work on paper, painted while he was still establishing himself in Queensland's regional arts community.
