A quiet rural landscape depicting a row of corn or wheat stacks receding across a field beneath a soft, cloud-streaked sky. Painted with a loose, impressionistic touch — the stacks rendered in warm ochres and golds against a cool blue-grey sky, with scattered pumpkins or similar produce visible on the ground. Signed lower right, "Atherton Furlong."

Framing

Framed in a weathered, warm silver-toned wide moulding with a distressed, aged finish — a substantial frame that gives real presence to a modestly sized piece, with a slender black-and-gold inner lip immediately around the painting to define its edge before opening out into the wider silver profile.

About Atherton Bernard Furlong (American/Canadian, 1849–1919)

Atherton Bernard Furlong (1849–1919) was a genuinely remarkable figure — a Maine-born painter, singer, and poet who achieved real distinction across all three fields. He trained and performed as a musician alongside major opera figures of his day (his obituary notes he sang with Adelina Patti and taught singers Lillian Nordica and Annie Louise Cary), before becoming one of the leading American painters of landscape and animal life of his generation. He later settled in Toronto, Canada, working from a studio on Yonge Street until his death in 1919. His paintings — quiet, atmospheric forest and farmland scenes, often featuring wildlife or livestock — are held in private and estate collections across North America and continue to appear at auction today.
