The Work
Leon Pericles AM is a highly regarded Western Australian printmaker, known for his hand-worked etchings and collagraphs built on the idea of "worlds within worlds." Headspace (2004), a hand-coloured etching in an edition of 150, depicts twelve grey heads sliced open at the crown, each revealing a different collection of objects packed inside — cooking utensils, tools, musical instruments, writing implements, sporting gear, flowers — a literal illustration of what occupies each figure's mind. Pericles has described his layered, collage-influenced approach as a way of enriching the texture of a print and bringing multiple mediums into a single frame, and Headspace is a clear example of that method: densely packed, individually characterised interiors that turn each head into a small self-portrait of a life's preoccupations.

Provenance
This was one of the first real artworks I ever purchased while working at a framing shop in Brisbane. One of my customers knew Leon Pericles and acquired this piece directly for me. I have had it for over 15 years, and it has traveled with me and hung in our home for that entire time.
