The Work

I have always loved printmaking, and this etching felt like an incredible example of the medium. The linework and depth give it a strong sense of texture — even though it isn't physically textured, it appears as if it is. I had admired David's work for some time and had always hoped to own a piece, so securing this one through the auction was particularly meaningful.

Provenance

I purchased Knowledge at a fundraising auction held by the Woolloongabba Art Gallery, most likely in 2014 or 2015. The work itself was made in 2013. At the time, I had not long started my business, so being able to acquire one of David's pieces at an affordable price felt like a stroke of luck.

Framing

The etching is presented with a double mount and framed in silky oak, stained a dark blue to reflect the deep blue inks in the piece. This choice enhances the subtle richness of the work while anchoring it to its place in the home.

About David Nixon

David Nixon is an Australian visual artist and printmaker based in Queensland. He studied Printmaking at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, and also holds degrees in Arts, English Literature, and History. He is recognised for his works on paper — etchings, lithographs, and mixed media prints — and has exhibited widely both in Australia and internationally. His practice has included collaborations such as a residency in Tokyo with master lithographer Satoru Itazu, where he explored experimental approaches to printmaking.
