I have always been drawn to landscapes, and this piece is a beautiful example of Wim's ability to capture both density and depth — the tangled, layered world of a North Queensland rainforest.

Provenance

For me, it holds an added layer of meaning: before I launched my own business, Wim gave me a private lesson in photo-etching. I wanted to better understand printmaking so I could approach framing with more insight and sensitivity. That generosity shaped my path as both framer and collector.

I purchased this piece directly from Wim, at the same time as another of his works — an ocean scene still to be photographed and catalogued — when he and Adele moved Studio West End from their original West End location to its current home. This painting carries not only the depth of the rainforest but also the memory of Wim's kindness and mentorship.

About Wim De Vos

Wim De Vos (1947–2018) was a Belgian-born, Brisbane-based artist, educator, and master printmaker. He co-founded Studio West End in 1998 with his partner Adele Outteridge, creating a space that combined teaching, community, and practice across printmaking, painting, sculpture, papermaking, and artist books. He exhibited regularly in Queensland, interstate, and internationally from 1979 onward, and his work is held in public and private collections across Australia, the USA, the UK, and the Netherlands. Deeply respected in Queensland's arts community, De Vos was known for his generosity as a teacher, inspiring hundreds of students over more than forty years and leaving a lasting legacy both through his own practice and through those he mentored. He was also well known in Brisbane's rock'n'roll scene through the 1960s and '70s, playing guitar, flute, and blues harp in several bands.
