Seated Figure with Child, after Michelangelo

This is a 19th-century French engraving reproducing a drawing by Michelangelo, engraved by Alphonse Leroy (1820–1902) and printed by Imp. Drouart of rue du Fouarre, Paris. Leroy trained at the Louvre under engraver Charles Cousin and went on to work for the Louvre's own chalcography workshop, producing engraved reproductions after drawings by some of history's greatest masters — Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Veronese, and Rubens among them. This piece reflects that serious, institutionally-connected tradition of reproductive printmaking, bringing masterworks held in French collections to a wider audience through fine engraving.
