The Work

This is an 1884 photogravure published by Gebbie & Co. of Philadelphia, a prominent American fine art publishing house founded by Scottish-American publisher George Gebbie. Gebbie & Co. specialised in large-scale photogravure reproductions of celebrated Salon paintings for the American market, reproducing work by artists such as Mihály Munkácsy, Julien Dupré, and Adolf Schreyer during this period. The Sheik's Daughter depicts two women in a garden courtyard, part of the Orientalist genre that dominated European and American Salon painting through the late nineteenth century — imagined, romanticised scenes of the Middle East that captured Victorian audiences' imagination. The original painter this piece was reproduced after has not yet been identified.

Framing

A compo-and-oak combination frame, typical of frame-making from roughly 1880 to 1920 — a fitting period match for the print itself. The outer moulding is solid oak in its natural grain; the inner ornament — an acanthus scroll pattern, a diamond lattice band, and beaded ribbing — is composition ornament (moulded gesso-and-glue compound) applied over the timber and finished in a bronze-green patina to resemble cast metal. Genuine wear and small losses to the compo are visible at the corners, consistent with its age.
