The Work

This still life captivated me with its mid-century palette and elegance. I framed it in a way that highlights both the period and my own take on mid-century design, using a black bean trim around the painting, mounted on hand fabric-wrapped backing, and set within a black bean float frame. After my divorce, I needed a piece to replace a work that had gone with my ex-husband. Its colours — teals and aquas — were exactly right.

About Ursula Heerdt

Ursula Heerdt was an artist active in mid-20th century Australia and was a member of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts. In 1960, she was completing a diploma of art teaching, during which she created this piece as part of her training in generic painting. Her work demonstrates a careful balance of colour, composition, and still life form, reflecting the style and sensibilities of the period.
